What we will be learning…with top learning tips

Reading, we are returning to weekly small group guided reading sessions this half term. We are focusing on inference skills and beginning to talk about authors choice of language and how it makes the reader feel.

Learning Top Tip –Stamina and reading speed is hugely important as you get ready for KS2. Please keep reading every day and try to extend the time you read to 20 mins by September at a speed of about 90 words per minute.

Maths: In maths – we are taking learning through our topic work. Giving purpose and learning in a creative way. Statistics, measuring and investigating number and pattern will be our focus in a meaningful context.

Learning Top Tip – Keep practising those multiplication and division facts. Knowing them fluently will give you the best start to KS2.

GRAMMAR – we are thinking about how the job of a word changes when we add certain suffixes. E.g. the noun power becomes an adjective when we add less- The boy was powerless against the dragon.

Learning Top Tip – Show your teacher you understand new grammar teaching by using it your speech and writing.
Science – This term we are learning about plants. The children will be outside, growing and learning about the different parts of plants and their purpose.

Art –Observational drawing and print making, inspired by William Morris designs.

History- Continuing with our topic “Footprints through time”. We will finish learning about Mary Anning and move onto a less well known but important local figure from Bridport – Dr Roberts. The local museum will be supporting the teaching of this topic and a walk around Bridport will take place. There is a surprising fact that the children will learn – watch this space.

PSHCE/ Jigsaw – Celebrating Differences.

Music- singing and performing new songs, develop and play untuned instruments musically

SPORTS DAY: weather permitting this will take place on the morning of the 27th June. Details will follow. In preparation the children have been enjoying athletics – developing the skills of running jumping and throwing.

PE KIT should be in school all the time. As the weather turns warmer we encourage children to bring in a sun hat or cap to wear for outdoor PE, and trainers are best.

Latest Year 2 Newsletter

To find out all about what we will be learning about this half term, and all about school life, please open our current Year 2 learning letter.

All homework is set on Thursday and due in the following Tuesday.

Each week the children are expected to complete the English and maths learning activity. These will provide children with an opportunity to practise and consolidate learning from the previous week.  As well as these set pieces, your child should read regularly and get an adult to sign their reading record book. Children are expected to read to an adult at least 4 times a week and are rewarded with a Rita Rabbit reading sticker.

Spellings – Children will be given a set of spelling to learn for the whole half term. This allows children to see the spelling they will be learning over the course of a half term. These lists are broken down into weeks with a quiz at the end of each week. Most of the spelling focus on everyday words that your child needs to know how to spell by the end of Year 2.

Times tables learning – In Year 2 we are learning to recall x2, x10 and x5 facts along with the related division facts. Regular practise at home will help children to develop this knowledge and understanding. Once children are secure on these times table facts they can take their bronze, silver and gold time table challenges. There are games on the website that children can play to help develop this knowledge and speed in recalling them.

General information

Please make sure that all school uniform and PE kit is clearly labelled. We advise kits to be in school throughout the week as classes have PE on different days throughout the week. Please include joggers and a sweatshirt for outdoor PE.

We do PE on: Wednesday and Friday.

Please let the school and the teacher know if your child has any allergies (that we do not already know about) or needs to take any medication.

Please remind your child to bring a coat every day in the winter months.
